Getting Started

Special Web Services

Be aware of where the site will be hosted on the campus. The particular campus server that the site will be hosted on may not support a technology that you would like to use for a Web site. For example the Central UNIX (main campus) Web server does not support mySQL, PHP, ASP.

CGI/Web server applications

  • On Central UNIX: Cal Poly's Information Technology Services department makes a program available to all Cal Poly Web developers called "mail.form". It accepts the input from a Web form, formats it for email delivery, and sends it to a Cal Poly email account. No other CGI based activity is supported on the Central UNIX systems.
  • Check with your department LAN coordinator to see if you department Web server allows you to run Web applications locally. A list of LAN coordinators is available through the ITS Service Desk Web site.

Databases

  • At the present, the Cal Poly's Central UNIX Web server does not provide database services for Web applications except through My Cal Poly Portal Services.
  • Check with your department LAN coordinator to see if your department Web server allows you to run Web applications locally. A list of LAN coordinators is available through the ITS Service Desk Web site.
